Where is Lake Kelimutu?

Mount Kelimutu is a volcano located on the island of Flores, in the province of East Nusa Tenggara.

The exact location of this mountain is in Pemo Village, Kelimutu District, Ende Regency, Flores.

Kelimutu is a combination of the word “Keli” which means mountain and the word “Mutu” which means to boil.

What makes this crater lake so interesting?

This mountain has three lakes.

What makes this lake unique and fascinating is its distinctive tricolor phenomenon.

The three crater lakes, known as Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Old Man’s Lake), Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (Young Man’s and Girl’s Lake), and Tiwu Ata Polo (Enchanted or Charmed Lake),

each have different colors that change over time due to volcanic activity and minerals in the water.

The observed colors of the lakes range from turquoise to green, red, brown, and black, creating a surreal and mesmerizing scene.

Local legends and beliefs surrounding the mystical aspects of the color changes add to the appeal of Lake Kelimutu.

Locals believe that the lake is a gathering place for the souls of the dead who have committed crimes during their lifetimes.

The area around Lake Kelimutu is also famous for its natural beauty, including dense forests, traditional villages, and unique flora and fauna.

Known as the Lake of Three Colours

Lake Kelimutu itself is made up of 3 lakes called Tiwi Ata Mbupu, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai, and Tiwu Ata Polo.

Each of these lakes has its own color. This is why Lake Kelimutu is also known as the Lake of Three Colours.

It is a white lake and is believed by the local people to be a meeting place for the souls of deceased parents. The lake itself covers an area of 4.5 hectares.

Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai

It is a blue lake and is believed by local people to be a gathering place for young souls who have died.

This lake is the largest of the three, covering about 5.5 hectares. This lake has a distinctive bluish moss-green color when viewed from a height.

Tiwu Ata Polo

It is a red lake, the local people believe that this lake is a gathering place for the souls of people who have died and committed crimes while alive.

The area of this lake is the smallest of the three, only about 4 hectares with a depth of 64 metres.

Volcanic lake

Lake Kelimutu in Flores is a type of volcanic lake. This is because this lake was formed by a volcanic process that created a crater/depression on top of a volcano.

It is located on Mount Kelimutu, a still active volcano at an altitude of 1,639 masl.

By the way, this mountain and lake are part of the Kelimutu National Park, which covers an area of 5,356.5 hectares.

It is home to 100 species of fauna.

Lake Kelimutu Traditional Event

Every year, the Lio People, the original inhabitants of the area, organize a traditional event called “Pati Ka Du’a Bapu Ata Mata”.

This event is held by the Lio People to honor their ancestors.

At the event, various foods will be offered to the ancestors as a thank you for the blessings given in the past year as well as an expression of prayer for ease of blessing for the following year.

The offerings usually include meat, rice, Betel nuts, and so on. The Lio people will also perform the Gawi dance together as a thanksgiving.

The event takes place by circling the Tiwu Ata Polo Lake until they find a stone offering altar, where all the food offerings are placed. It is also the center of the ritual.

Today, this ritual is combined into a festival called the Kelimutu Lake Festival.

How to get to Lake Kelimutu

To get to Lake Kelimutu, you must first go to the province of Ende.

You can use air transport to H. Hasan Aroeboesman Airport.

It is the only airport in Ende Regency.

After arriving at Ende Regency, you can continue your journey to Moni Village.

This village is the nearest village at the foot of Mount Kelimutu.

The distance from the Airport is about 70 kilometers.

To get to Moni Village, you can rent a vehicle such as a car or motorbike in Ende Regency.

You can also use travel services in Ende Regency to Moni Village or Mount Kelimutu.

Other Tourist Attractions Around Lake Kelimutu

Apart from visiting Lake Kelimutu, there are several other tourist attractions that you can visit while you are there.

The first tourist attraction you can visit is the Murundao Waterfall, which is located in Koanara Village and has a height of about 15 meters.

You can also visit Oka Detusoko Hot Springs, Teletubbies Hill, and Wologai Traditional Village.

The Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Lake Kelimutu is before sunrise and when the weather is clear.

Don’t visit this lake during the rainy season in Indonesia, as the best time to enjoy the beauty of this lake is at sunrise.

Although there are many facilities around the lake, you cannot stay overnight.

Therefore, you should spend the night in Moni Village to catch the sunrise.

There are many hostels or accommodations offered by local people.

You have to leave early in the morning around 03.00 am.

This is the right time if you want to go to Lake Kelimutu from Moni Village.

From the top of Lake Kelimutu, you can also see the panoramic view of the natural beauty of Moni Village.
