Indonesia is a country that is very rich in various types of food.

In every region and province in Indonesia, there are various regional specialties that have become iconic or characteristic of the region.

For example, Solo is famous for its Liwet rice, and Surabaya is renowned for  Rawon.

But even though there are hundreds or maybe thousands of types of cuisine in Indonesia, there is one type of cuisine that every region and even all Indonesians love, namely Nasi Goreng or Fried Rice.

but to distinguish from other fried rice from other countries, we called it Indonesian Nasi goreng

What is Nasi Goreng (fried rice)?

Nasi goreng, or fried rice, is a type of cuisine where rice is fried on a pan with seasonings such as salt, chili, shallots, and garlic, as well as fish, chicken, meatballs, or eggs.

Fried rice is not only famous in Indonesia but throughout the Asian continent.

It seems that every country in Asia has its own fried rice recipe because rice is the staple food of Asians.

Origin of Fried Rice

Fried rice is not originally from Indonesia but from China.

This is due to the large number of Chinese people living in Indonesia, resulting in cultural and food acculturation.

Many Chinese specialties eventually became Indonesian specialties, such as bakso and soto, both of which are very popular in Indonesia.

If you visit Indonesia, you can easily find these foods.

There are many street foods in every city that sell this food.

Types of Fried Rice in Each Country in Asia

Some popular varieties of fried rice have their own specific ingredient lists.

In Greater China, the most famous varieties include Yangzhou fried rice and Hokkien fried rice.

Japanese chāhan is often ascribed to Japan, which in fact originated from a Chinese fried rice dish.

Bokkeum-bap from Korea is generally not considered as such, although there is a Korean Chinese variety of Bokkeum-bap.

In Southeast Asia, similarly constructed Indonesian, Malaysian, and Singaporean fried rice and Thai khao phat are popular dishes.

Indonesian nasi goreng

Simple Fried Rice Recipe

Ingredients:

1 clove garlic, thinly sliced

1 clove shallot, thinly sliced

2 cayenne pepper or to taste, thinly sliced

1 red chili or according to taste, thinly sliced

Sweet soy sauce

Cooking oil

Salt

Flavoring

How to make:

Heat cooking oil in a wok, then sauté garlic and shallots until fragrant.

Add rice and other ingredients.

Stir until evenly distributed, correct the flavor, and serve.

Fried rice is best using leftover rice or cold rice

Javanese Fried Rice Recipe

Ingredients:

3 plates of cold rice

1 egg

5-7 meatballs, sliced (can be substituted with chicken or other protein)

Enough oil for sautéing

1 tbsp sugar

2 tbsp sesame oil

1 tsp mushroom broth

Sweet soy sauce to taste

4 white onions

6 shallots

2 candlenuts

Ebi to taste, soak to soften

2 tbsp salt

1 tablespoon peppercorns (can use ground pepper)

How to make:

Grind the onion, ebi ( schrimp ), candlenut, and pepper. Then sauté with a little oil.

After the seasoning is cooked, add the meatballs and eggs, stir, and sauté for a while.

Add rice, sugar, sesame oil, sweet soy sauce, stir well again. Correct the flavor, remove from heat, and serve with crackers, fresh vegetables, and fried onions.

Special Fried Rice Recipe

Ingredients:

2 servings of rice

50gr  chicken meat

2 eggs

3 cloves shallots, chopped into small pieces

2 garlic, chopped into small pieces

2 spring onions, chopped

1 curly chili

1 teaspoon sweet soy sauce

2 teaspoon fish sauce

1 teaspoon oyster sauce

1/2 tsp soy sauce

1/2-1 teaspoon sugar

1/2 tsp pepper

1/2 tsp margarine

1 tsp mushroom stock

Oil for sautéing

How to make:

Heat a little oil in a wok, then stir-fry the chicken until cooked, and then set aside.

In the same wok, heat a little oil and scramble the eggs until cooked. Then, add all the onion and chili. Stir and stir-fry until cooked.

Add the rice, stir until smooth. Then, add the shredded chicken, and all the ingredients of soy sauce, salt, pepper, and mushroom stock, and stir again until smooth.

You can test the flavor. When it’s right and delicious according to you, remove from heat and serve with cucumber or lettuce.
